Results over the last 2 weeks has seen both Helderberg and Hamlets lose which means the top 4 places on the 1XV log are as follows:
There is no doubt that we will have to work even harder to maintain our position with much commitment, dedication and focus as this 2017 1XV league will go down to the wire. An apt quote which is relevant to our players – “If you are’nt going all the way, why go at all?” – Joe Namath.
Our home match against Helderberg on Saturday 22 July will be a big day, so diarise the date as our men will need all your support. The 1981 Villager 1XV (winners of the Grand Challenge and Ohlssons Challenge Shield) will be having a reunion that day adding to the day’s vibe. Also, Dick Cocks, the Australian international who played for Villagers and WP in 1971, will be at the club for the match and he would love to meet those players he played with whilst at the club.
The First Test between the Springboks and France resulted in the much-needed win for Allister Coetzee and his men. France will certainly be bolstered by the addition of those players who played in the French Club Final and the Kings Park Test will pose a different challenge for the Boks. We had a nice turnout in the Clubhouse for the Loftus match with Piet Geldenhuys acting as a very able cheerleader whenever South Africa scored points.
The British and Irish Lions put their hands up over the weekend and the player combinations are slowly coming together. To keep the Crusaders try-less was a tremendous defensive effort and they were certainly not short of “grunt” up front. It remains an intriguing tour and there will still be many twists and turns.
On the Proteas we can sadly only say AGAIN!!! Enough said.
Two important dates that we sincerely hope will be diarised by all the Villagers are as follows:
Thursday 31 August 2017 – Annual Golf Day – Rondebosch Golf Course.
Thursday 12 October 2017 – Annual Black Tie Dinner – Kelvin Grove.
Further details will follow shortly.
Sadly, as reported, Villagers lost another rugby gentleman and stalwart in Ian Stadler who passed away after a long illness. The funeral will take place in Hermanus at the United Church on Friday 16 June 2017 at 15h00.
That’s it for this week then. May the rain keep on falling and may you all enjoy what will be a short week.
