What a start to the DHL Stormers Super Rugby campaign! The tempo of the game, the skills’ levels, the tries scored were all a step up from last season and the team management and players quite obviously worked extremely hard in the off-season.
The Derby Day darts evening held at Hamiltons last Wednesday was a resounding success. Eight teams from each club entered into serious “battle” and eventually 2 teams were left “standing” to contest the final. Dave Edwards and George Snowball kept the Villager flag flying high and in a breathtaking final narrowly lost to their Hamiltons opponents. Despite a combined age difference of approximately 70 years the oldies managed to keep their “elbows high” (interpret that as you so wish), but in the end the youthful stamina and better eyesight of the Hamiltons team saw them home. Nevertheless, well done to Dave and George as worthy runners up. The next Derby Day event will be the Golf Day at Metropolitan Golf Club on Wednesday 15 March 2017.
Club 100 held its second meeting this past Thursday and it was a most memorable occasion. Marcello Fiasconaro and Gavin Cowley were simply superb as guest speakers and not only provided so many insights into the world of top sport, but also inspired the members of the 1XV. You don’t often have an athletics world record breaker and one of the best South African all-rounders (rugby and cricket) in the same room sharing their sport and life experiences. What was most pleasing was after the formal proceedings many of the 1XV together with Club 100 members remained for quite some time to chat informally with Marcello and Gavin. This is what Club 100 is all about and, hopefully, more and more members will attend the monthly functions. The next gathering will be in the Clubhouse on Thursday 30 March 2017.
The Under 20 training camp held at Villagers this past weekend was an enjoyable and physically demanding 2 days. The work ethic of the players was commendable and the structure put in place by Mo and SP (head and assistant coaches) out of top drawer. After the Saturday training sessions the players enjoyed a pizza evening before going off to Newlands to watch the Stormers vs Bulls match – what was special was that they insisted that they all wear Villager jerseys to the match! The players slept over at Brookside on Saturday night and were up for a 7am run on Sunday morning, followed by a breakfast, one-on-ones with the coaches and then home.
Just a reminder to those members who have not yet renewed their club memberships for 2017 that as from 1 March 2017 you will no longer be entitled to bar discounts. Please let’s make a concerted effort to renew for the season and also to surpass our 2016 non-player club membership numbers. The club survives on this most important and critical source of income.
Brookside will host its first official pre-season friendly against Uni-Mil this coming Saturday 4 March 2017. Kick off times are as follows:
