Club News

So much has happened at Villagers these past few months as we positively move into the future that a quote from the late Danie Craven summed it up when he said of Villagers : “In all this time, they have remained a great club, playing the game in the right traditions, and always producing men we can look up to. They have always given great pesonalities to the game and I feel sure they will always continue to do so”.  That remains true to this day and you are the men who are the personalities who will always see Villagers respected and admired in the broader rugby community.

The Villager FC congratulates the Free State Cheetahs on winning the 2017 Currie Cup. It was a fully deserved victory as the team went through the Currie Cup season unbeaten and played a most enjoyble brand of rugby. The last chapter in the 2016 South African rugby calender will be the Springbok tour to the UK in November. Let’s hope that the tour is successful and that the Boks make us all proud.

Derby Day between Villagers and Hamiltons will take place in 2017. The rugby will take place at Hamiltons on Saturday 18 March 2017 with a build up of events earlier in the year. The two clubs will be involved in a cricket day in January, a darts evening in February and a golf day on the Wednesday before Derby Day. Further details on these scheduled events will appear in future newsletters.

This coming Saturday will see the players and their partners involved in a fun day at the club when they will participate in a “Closest-to-the-pin” golf competition starting at 12h30. The competition will take place on the B field and the club will provide the fires for a bring-and-braai. Should you wish to participate please notify this office by Thursday 27 October 2016.

You will have received notification of the last meeting for the year of The Grays on Friday 18 November 2016. The guest speaker will be Keith Richardson, ex-headmaster of Wynberg Boys’ High, and we hope that we will enjoy a great turnout to close the year in fine Villager style. Please contact John Owen-Hughes or George Snowball to secure your seat.

Lastly, but most importantly is a sincere request to possibly see your way clear to attend the Annual General Meeting in the Clubhouse this Thursday 27 October 2016 at 18h30. The attendance at an AGM is a demonstration of what the club is all about. It is appreciated that many have prior commitments and have to juggle busy work commitments, but if you are free please pop down to the club for an hour or two and show your support for the Villager FC.
