Villager FC 1st XV Head Coach, Gunner Hughes, has announced his side to take on Macassar in their first Super League B fixture of 2014 this Saturday at Brookside. Kick off 4pm.
In what is expected to be a difficult road back to the Super League A, the Dirty Whites have taken no chances in this weekends clash by selecting their best available side to take on newly promoted Macassar on Saturday. Although Macassar finished near the bottom of last years Premier League table, coach Hughes is firmly focussed on the teams goals “As a team we sat together and set goals for the first few games of the year where we have aimed to achieve certain objectives. We achieved our first objective when we beat a tough Bellville side away two weeks ago but now our attention turns to this week where we are taking no chances, this league is unpredictable and we need to be prepared for that.”
Selecting the side to play Macassar was not an easy one with so many quality players available to the coaches, “I don’t envy the coaching staffs job in trying to select a 23 man squad especially when it’s such a tight knit squad” Said newly appointed captain Ashley Clarke, “As a squad, we spoke about the effect that the negativity of not being selected can have in a club environment. We have focused on how not being chosen for the 1st team squad will still benefit the club as a whole and full support is encouraged” continued Clarke.
The team for Saturday consists of a good balance of youth and experience something Clarke believes is invaluable, “Experience is vital in this league as the teams we play against can very quickly take control by playing a fast paced and skilful game that can be very difficult to stop. The youngsters in the squad can become unstuck in situations of pressure and this is where the seniors in the team will be aiming to calm the situations down.”
Hughes believes the side are a vastly improved one but remained cautious as the league has yet to begin, “As coaches we are happy with the progress of the side but we must keep working hard at improving each week, we are taking nothing for granted this year. We will be focussing on one game at a time ensuring we do not get too ahead of ourselves.”
Aside from the teams performance on the field Clarke emphasised that the results are not the only objective of the team this year, “We are trying to develop a culture within the club that hopefully will attract more interest from the general public, old boys and other players themselves. We are part of a special club and it would be great to see the kind of support Villager enjoyed in the early 2000’s”
