Faith placed in Clarke for Captaincy

Coach Andrew ‘Gunner’ Hughes has announced Ashley Clarke as captain of the Villager FC 1st XV for the 2014 season. Hughes announced the decision at practice on Monday evening this week after players and coaches voted last week.

Ashley, the son of current Villager President and former WP wing ‘Bossie’ Clarke, is a Capetonian local and attended Rondebosch Junior and Bishops High where he excelled in both cricket and rugby at school having represented the 1st team in both codes. After matriculating Ashley moved into the professional side of the game representing WPU19, WPU21, WP Currie Cup, SWD Currie Cup, Leopards, Racing Metro and Massy Essonne in France.

Hughes is delighted to have a player of Ashleys quality in his squad for the 2014 season, “Ashley is a quality player having played professionally for a number of years in both this country and in France, his experience will play a massive part in preparing the squad for the rigours of the B League.” Clarke agreed that the B League is not an easy one, “Playing in the B League is difficult for a number of reasons but most notably the teams we face are determined to beat a side like Villager with our history, which makes our job that little bit harder than it otherwise would have been.”

Clarke as captain leads a fresh 1st XV squad with the majority of the team having only joined Villager FC this year following an extensive recruitment drive by head coach Gunner Hughes. “Club rugby is a numbers game, the better the depth in your club the better the results will be at the end of the season thus we are extremely pleased at the 1st XV squad we have managed to put together for the 2014 season” Hughes said.

Clarke added “Looking at our squad for this year I am hugely impressed with the talent and commitment we have, I have no doubt this squad will do Villager proud in 2014.”
