2nd XV Villager FC vs Collegians

2nd XV Villager FC 13 - 27 Collegians
27 May 2016 - 19:45

Another unlucky game for the Villager 2nd XV.  Another game that should have been won.

That being said Collegians started the game like a shot from a gun, almost scoring in the very first second of the game and then causing another heart attack a couple of seconds later only to be forced out in the corner. Villagers were very lucky to escape from these attacks without conceding points and were allowed back into the game. Good, structured play gave Village a territorial advantage reaching the half way mark of the first half, however not protecting the ball and lots of penalties meant the territory was not converted into points and allowed Collegians to draw first blood with an opportunistic try from a stolen line out ball. 0 – 5. The referee handed out penalty after penalty in both directions and the Vikings were given a life line when no.10 Abdoelatief White slotted the kick to open the scoreboard. 3 – 5. This was then reversed moments later as the referee got fed up by repeated infringements and handed the mentioned kicker a yellow card. The penalty was converted and Village were trailing by 5 again. 3 – 8. Collegians tried hard to use the extra man to their advantage, but Villagers defended very well and right on the stroke of half time another shot at goal was converted by no.9 Zaahir Omar to reduce the lead of the visitors at the break. HT 6 – 8.

Village started the 2nd half in almost the same way Collegians did in the first with good structured runs by the forwards and backs. For the first 10min it was all Villagers with the forwards securing good turn over ball and the backs making sure the advantage line is kept under pressure. Although the Vikings were surprisingly struggling in the scrums, they produced a gem that allowed no.12 Jamie Croeser to run in under the posts virtually untouched. The conversion was taken and for the first time the Vikings were leading. 13 – 8. Unfortunately that is where it ended as the next 20min was agonising to watch as Collegians were allowed back in the game through a number of tries.  Good hands by the backline produced the first. 13 – 15. Then a push over try got the crowd talking. 13 – 20. And finally all hope of a comeback was shattered when a good build up by the Vikings was spoiled by and interception and finally a try by a player running straight through the middle of a ruck.  13 – 27. Another disappointing end to a game where the V2 team did more right then wrong, but just couldn’t round off against the log leaders
