Its Villager Schools 7s time again!

Now that the dust has settled after the local school derbies, players, coaches and supporters of schoolboy rugby turn their attention towards the 45th Annual Villager Schools 7’s held on the 6th of September (Postponed from 30 August due to poor weather) at Brookside in Claremont, the home of the Dirty Whites.

Formed in 1968 by John Gainsford and Dave Stewart in response to the booing of the crowd at the 1961 Springbok test vs England (Boks won 5 – 0) where kicking was the order of the day, the Villager Schools 7’s was created to encourage young players to play positive rugby with a ‘not scared to lose’ attitude and form a lifelong association with one of the best games on earth, Rugby Union.

This years event promises to be an explosive affair with 32 participating teams all vying for the winners trophy, ultimately however this event is usually decided by the team that wants it the most and those that play the most attractive rugby. Last years winners, Tygerberg HS, will once again be participating as will the local schools and a selection of development sides. The nature of 7’s rugby provides the perfect opportunity to level the playing fields somewhat between the super schools and the schools in the lower league, ensuring an upset is always on the cards.

For rugby enthusiasts everywhere the Villager 7’s is always a highlight on the sporting calender, where running rugby, pure determination and thrilling climaxes dominate proceedings, while traditionally the event has been a great way to send off the Matrics as for many this will be their last chance representing their schools.

In an attempt to bring more vibe to the 7s this year, Anton Taylor, the creator of the YouTube sensation, Jozi Shore, will be master of ceremonies for the day. Anton brings with him a wealth of experience as M’C and always ensures that the vibe of any event is one to remember. With Anton as M’C and a DJ playing music, Brookside is the place to be on Friday night!

For the first time ever those that can not attend the games on Friday or can only arrive after work, all games scores can be followed live on Twitter (@VillagerFC) and pool updates can be found at the 7’s section of the Villager website. See FIXTURES AND RESULTS. Photos of the event will also be posted throughout the day on the Villager facebook page. (/VillagerFC).

Spectators are reminded that ample parking is available in our underground parking facility as well as at Claremont Primary School.
