It was a case of back to the drawing board as the 3rd’s lost their first league game of the season on Friday night. The game started off at a frantic pace with the Milnerton forwards throwing everything at our boys. Our defence soaked up the pressure and immediately replied with a Brent McDougall try, splitting the Milnerton midfield defence open with a fantastic individual effort, duly converted by Phumi Pepeteka. Milnerton replied with a penalty and another Pepeteka penalty meant the boys went into the dressing room 10 – 3 ahead.
Milnerton altered their approach in the 2nd period by playing a territory game, succesfully pinning our boys back into the corners, although we had no one else to blame but ourselves for surrendering possession very cheaply. What resulted was a flurry of penalties conceded, allowing Milnerton to enter into a 12-10 lead. With 3 minutes to go the final nail was hammered into the Village coffin as we conceded yet another penalty to send the boys back to Brookside with a 15-10 loss.
Positives were that our defence was once again superb conceding no tries and not allowing Milnerton anywhere near our tryline. We will definitely need to work on our ball security at the breakdown, something which let Milnerton back into the game on Friday.
