Last Thursday, the 30th April, The Fourths.com played UCT 4th side in what was officially the Fourths first home game. It was a beautiful evening for rugby, and the supporters from both sides came out in their droves,
Villagers started off with a bang, keeping sustained pressure on the students, the forwards dominating their smaller counterparts in the set piece, rucks and at the collision point. This pressure produced the first try of the game from a rolling maul, from which the big lock, Dave Swart was able to dive over and score his first try for The Fourths.com.
Unfortunately Villagers struggled a little with their handling, this lead to a number of turnovers which the students used to turn into points. UCT had a handy 9 point lead at the break, the score was 14-5.
The second half started badly for villagers, the students used their superior fitness and speed to move the ball all over the park, exhausting the defenders which eventually led to their last try of the night, which was also converted.
The Fourths coaching staff made a number of changes and the fresh legs bore fruit. The giant prop, Jason “Millie” Manz bashing over from close range after being dared by one of the UCT forwards to pick and go, taking the score to 21-10.
Unfortunately for Villagers that’s how it ended. With the fourth loss of the season from four games, things aren’t looking good for the once mighty Fourths. On a more positive note there is lots of room for improvement, and the boys seem very keen to get stuck into False Bay this coming Friday.
