Match Report: The Fourths vs Helderberg

Friday the 5th of June sparked a big match-up for the Fourths as they prepared themselves mentally and physically to play the formidable tow-truck drivers from Helderberg!

The weather took a turn for the better (compared to last week’s torrential flooding), and the Fourths were hungry to send those Strand boys back to their mountain with bruised flanks and damaged egos.

The first half got underway and the boys started bashing away at the Helderberg team. An unlucky break saw one of their guys brush past a couple of tackles and score a try that was softer than their front row! Lucky for the Fourths the Helderberg number 9 was kicking worse than Kurt Coleman with pinkeye in both eyes, and an amazing display of skill saw Devin ‘Uncle Fester’ Canning score a try after the restart – evening the score up to 5 all. The Fourths really had their heads in the game, and the forwards and backs were both putting in some big hits. This didn’t stop Helderberg however, and they went on to score another 2 tries. Just before the end of the first half, some great phase play saw Eben Daniels bash the ball over the line, making the score 17-10.

The second half came underway and saw the likes of Jason ‘Miley Cyrus’ Mans make his way into the tight-head position and Ryan Povey slot into flank. The boys kept their opposition on their toes, but couldn’t stop the Helderberg boys from scoring another try, making the score 22-10. Some more changes were made and saw Warren ‘Wazza’ Taylor and Dave Swart come on for the locks, Taufeeq de Villiers join in with the backline, and Chris ‘Catch and Release’ Wilkinson and Matthew Bannatyne replace the 1 and 2 positions. An amazing line from veteran Gerard Pedersen resulted in a try for the Fourths, and coupled with a kick through the polls by Kevin ‘Spongebob’ Spiby that would have put Jonny Wilkinson to shame – the score sat at 17-22. A little bit of back and forth play saw the just outside of the Helderberg 22 with a line out, a converted try away from victory over the Tow truckers. Unfortunately Banny was throwing skewer than Stevie Wonder during loadshedding – and a skew lineout signalled the end of the game, as well as his impending DOD nomination.

Man of the match was Eben Daniels who looked far to laanie sporting his new MOM flat-peak at the Wacky Wine Festival. As the boys walked off the field towards the changing rooms, something was different form all of the previous times – their heads were held high because they knew that during this game they played together as a team!

Final score:

The Fourths 17

Helderberg 22
