Match Report: The Fourths vs MC Marais

In the torrential rain on Friday evening took on MC Marais (UCT 5ths), in the first game of the double header at Villagers. The Fourths took the field early to start their warm up for this much anticipated fixture, braving the terrible weather. After a slight scare of a non-pitching ref the match kicked off on time, with the home side running out with green armbands showing their support for Gary, playing into the wind away from the clubhouse.

Struggling to get out their own half, the Fourths spent most of the second half pinned back in their half. The defence stood strong but after waves of attack and good ball retention from MC the line was broken, and the first try was scored in the left had corner. The conversion was good and put them into the lead.

The Fourths’ forwards put up a good effort in the set fazes with a strong scrum and the lines outs getting better as the game went on, leading from the front was “Uncle Fester” Big D. The backline struggled to get going and spent most of the time covering deep kicks into the corner and helping out MC with Foxy’s DOD soccer manoeuvres.

Going into the shed at half time the Fourths were down 12-0, with UCT managing to score a second unconverted try.

Playing with the wind in the second half the Fourths got more possession working well off the line outs and strong carries through the mid-field but still struggled in the conditions and failed to make an impact on the score board. The Fourths showed some great fight in the match with strong defence, with some of the smaller chaps leading the way. JJ and Yusri put in some great hits and kept UCT at bay.

Unfortunately the stretcher was pulled out and Chinwag was stretchered off the pitch with a gammy knee; we wish him all the best for his recovery.

MC scored the last try of the match with turnover ball and showed some great support play, hands and finishing to score in the corner. The gees from both sides was great and game was played in great spirit, the game ended with UCT winning 0-17. We wish MC all the best with the rest of their season and look forward to running on the green mile to return the favour! and MC Marias welcomed the second match of the evening though a mixed tunnel; where the fired up Shabeen Boys put it all on the line against Goodwood, ending up with a win #AllinforG.
