Opening day jitters compounded an average display from a very talented Vikings team.
From the get-go, nerves were evident as indecision and poor option taking allowed the opposition to register two early scores. With the home team finally settling and getting momentum a lack of concentration and urgency gifted the Helderberg outside back another try, stretching their lead to 19-0. A try from senior player Jermaine Achilies, was just reward for an encouraging passage of play. An Ishmail Sadien score sandwiched another Helderberg try to end the first half 24 – 12 down.
A couple of half time substitutions and a few stern words in the huddle, was hopefully the tonic to see the boys transform their performance. Despite an early Helderberg score, stretching their lead, the Vikings never backed down and began to get the upper hand. From some neat approach play, second half sub, Yaaseen Salie beat his defender on the outside to get over for the score. With seven minutes left on the clock Achilies was on the end of some neat “hands” to go over for his second try and reduce the lead to 5 points. A frantic final five minutes, which saw the visiting team show real character and nerves of steel in fending off wave after wave of Villager attack, brought an end to proceedings. For the home team, Brandon Henning was a tower of strength and put in a workhorse display.
Scorers: Tries: Jermaine Achilies (2), Ishmail Sadien & Yaaseen Salie; Cons: Ash Reid & Christian Weston
