Saturday brought us all down to earth with a jolt. Only the Thirds managed a victory over Union-Milnerton with the other teams displaying great fighting spirit, but not enough to secure victories. Full marks to Union-Milnerton who has over the last few years adopted a professional approach and secured the necessary players to take them into Super League A in 2017. Saturday was a good measuring stick for our club and there are certainly indicators for success that will require robust debate. The results were as follows: 1XV lost 22 – 45. 2XV lost 16 -24. 3XV won 13 -12. Under 20A lost 0 -36.
The aftermatch get-together was a most special occasion and it was good to see just how well-supported a club rugby day can be. The cameraderie displayed between the players and supporters in a packed clubhouse is what club rugby is all about and again demonstrated the fine spirit of rugby union. Thanks to all those Villagers who came down to the club and despite the disappointing scores still showed the true spirit of Villager hospitality.
We were able to use our new committee room on Saturday to entertain the Union-Milnerton officials. It proved to be a resounding success as a venue and was very favourably commented upon by all who attended the aftermatch function.
A very special and meaninful event took place last Thursday evening. The 1XV players who played on Saturday were handed their matchday jerseys by a family member(s). The players were totally unaware of the jersey handover and it took them totally by surprise. We do underestimate the impact and importance of such events and there were emotional moments during the handover session. A dinner was enjoyed by all and the Villager family spirit was so prevalent throughout the evening. Thanks to all who were involved in making the evening so enjoyable.
This Friday 19 August 2016 the club will be in action at Brookside against the Violets RFC. The matches are scheduled as follows: 1XV vs Violets 21:00. 2XV vs Violets 19:40. 3XV vs Violets 18:30. Under 20A vs Violets 18:30.
Saturday 20 August 2016 will see the opening match of the Rugby Championship for the Springboks against Argentina in Nelspruit at 17:00. The club will be geared for the match with a big screen and the best drinks and eats in Cape Town. So come down to Brookside, shout for the Boks at your “rugby home” and simply have a jft (jolly fine time).
Lastly, the Villager FC warmly congratulates Wayde van Niekerk on an absolutely brilliant 400m Olympic gold medal. How proud he made us feel to be South Africans as he demolished the world record. What a run! What an athlete! What a gold medal! We salute and thank you Wayde van Niekerk
