The Villager FC enjoyed a very successful weekend this past weekend. Our teams travelled out to Paarl to meet the Young Peoples RFC with the following results :
- 1XV won 25 – 10.
- 2XV won 29 – 12.
- 3XV won 36 -12.
- U20A won22 – 19.
The club made a good statement after the June/July break and the teams need our strong support for their last 5 matches of which the next 4 are at home.
Congratulations must go to the WPRFU who this past Saturday also enjoyed spectacular results. The U18 Academy team beat the Blue Bulls in the Final, the U18 Craven Week team beat the Golden Lions in the Final, the WP U19 team beat EP, the WP Currie Cup team beat Border and secured top position on the 14 province league, the Stormers beat the Kings, won their conference and secured a home quarter final against the Chiefs.
Great achievements for a proud Union!
Two events took place this week that is part of the process of re-building the Villager family. A meeting was held with the 1XV squad where the remainder of the season was discussed. At the end of the discussion each member received a pair of red socks (in keeping with the club’s playing kit) that he must wear every Friday. It would be great if all of us (past and present) can make the effort of making Fridays Villager Red Socks Day. A function was also held with the Under 20s to emphasise how important they are to the club and why they must remain with the club after their Under 20 year and even after their playing days. The evening closed with each player receiving a VFC wristband followed by pizzas and drinks.
This Saturday 23 July sees our teams in action against Hands and Hearts at Brookside. The kick-off times are as follows:
- 1XV 15:30 A field.
- 2XV 14:00 A field.
- 3XV 13:00 A field.
4 U20A 13:00 B field.
The matches kick off slightly earlier than usual as, should you wish, there is enough time to get to Newlands for the Super Rugby quarter final at 19:00.
Also on Saturday 23 July before the 1XV match there will be a get-together of the great 1973 Villager Grand Challenge winning team.
There is going to be a wonderful turn out of the members of this team who 43 years ago in the slush and mud of Newlands defeated the Maties through a single Mike Bowditch penalty.
Lastly, as part of a team building exercise the 1XV will be hosting a Golf Day at Atlantic Beach on Sunday 24 July. Tee off times are from 08:52 to 10:04. It would be hugely appreciated if you can see your way clear to arrange a 4-ball to enjoy a morning with the 1XV players.
Please contact Dave Edwards at the Villager offices if you would like to participate.
We wish you well for the rest of this rainy, cold Cape Town week (we desperately need the rain). Keep the flu bug away and it will be enjoyable to see you down at Brookside on Saturday.
