BELLVILLE TECH 26 – 24 VILLAGER
The Rosina Paarwater Stadium played host to the Vikings final preseason fixture against Premier A club, Bellville Tech.
Losing the toss, Villager had first half advantage of the stiff north westerly wind. Conceding an early score, against the run of play, the boys settled and began to take control of matters. Midway through the first half, a penalty was awarded to Villager, just short of the opposition line. From a well worked penalty set piece, Tristan De Gouveia barreled over for the first score. Aswad Reid added the conversion.
Not long after the restart and outside centre, Joel Murphy, ghosted past his opposite number, left the fullback flat footed and stepped the cross cover to dot down under the sticks. Reid obliged with the two pointer. Tails up the boys attacked at will and from a line out drive, first receiver Reid, stepped, shimmied and accelerated through a man made gap to run in, under the posts. The fly-half then added a penalty to the conversion of his try.
Going into the break 24 – 7 to the good, there was still plenty to play for, factoring in the strong wind. The second half started much like the first half ended with Villager on the ascendancy. However silly mistakes and a sense of panic seemed to engulf the Villager players. Sensing blood, the opposition capitalised and pounced on the many errors, to run in some long distance tries. Before you knew it the Bellville Tech flyhalf was slotting over a penalty to edge the hosts into a 26 – 24 lead. A frantic final five, saw the boys from Brookside mount wave after wave of attack only to be thwarted by a game home defense.
