Villager Gunning For Gustrouw

Villager FC, after four consecutive defeats, will need no additional motivation when they face last years rivals and Super league A newcomers, St Georges RFC away at Gustrouw in Helderberg on Saturday 23 May. Kick off is at 4pm.

With the Super League A being as difficult as many predicted, and with only 2 wins from 6 games, Villager now face the arduous task of trying to stay in the league this year. To achieve that feat Villager will need to beat teams in the bottom half of the league, starting of course with St Georges this weekend.

St Georges RFC, founded in 1941 and fondly known as the  ‘Lu Lu Boys’, are a club full of passionate members that enjoys the support of their entire community. With the backing of so many towards their cause, St Georges has in recent years become a club on the rise. Ably led by Head coach Wilbur Kraak, the Lulu’s gained promotion at the end of last year in an exciting three-way race between Helderberg rivals Sir Lowrians and Villager FC. With the victory over Sir Lowrians in the last league game of the year, Villager eventually finished first with Sir Lowrians in second, forcing St Georges into a play-off game which they won cementing their place in this years SLA.

Of course what makes the St Georges story more interesting was their surprise win over Villager FC at Brookside last year in their only defeat at home in 2014. With last years result in mind and with both clubs struggling to win games in this years league, a win this weekend becomes vital to both should they wish to remain in the top league next year.

With St Georges sitting second last on the log having only beaten bottom of the log Helderberg, Villager should be looking to claim a win over the Lulus, however being the passionate club that they are and combined with their large supporter base, Villager will certainly be up against it playing at Gustrouw this weekend.

Villagers task has been made even more difficult when one looks at the team sheet that is noticeably missing Captain Ashley Clarke who received a red card on Wednesday night between UCT. For the first time in a year and a half Villager will be without their inspirational captain which may be the biggest challenge they will have to overcome this year. Other notable omissions from the team is centre and vice-captain Stuart Pattison and David Radloff who are both unavailable this weekend.

New faces in the side sees Simon Greenwood, the grandson of Springbok Colin Greenwood who controversially at the time moved to Rugby League becoming a professional, starts his first game at flank, whilst Andrew Jones-Davies, the grandson of Springbok Dave Stewart, moves from wing to Flyhalf for the first time. Other débutantes include Cameron Doyle who starts at Lock, whilst Luke Masasire starts his first game on the wing.

Happily for Villager Ryan Germishuys makes his comeback from injury starting from the bench, whilst Zubayr Abrahams joins the side again after a few weeks of unavailability due to his being a Doctor.

Head Coach Andrew Hughes is confident his charges can overcome the expected spirited St Georges side.

“We’ve been through a tough few weeks and have been on the wrong side of big scores, but the fella’s have not dropped their heads just yet. For sure they are disappointed at losing, especially the youngsters in the side, however I know they can overcome St Georges if they turn up in the right mindset.” He says

Hughes concluded. “The lulus are not a side to be taken lightly, we lost to them last year at home and they are known to be extremely passionate about their club, so we will have to be able to counter that and stick to our own game to walk away with an important win.”

Villager FC looks forward to visiting St Georges at their home ground in Helderberg and encourages as many Villager supporters to make the trek out their to enjoy the hospitality that St Georges offer.
