Villager FC, after a crushing defeat last week at the hands of Tygerberg RFC at home, will need to rally both as a club and as a 1st XV to overcome their traditional, and in recent years largely successful, rivals Hamiltons RFC at Green Point tonight. Kick off is at 9pm.
With Villager FC having been in the Super League B section for two years, tonight happily sees the first meeting of the two oldest rugby clubs in South Africa in a league fixture since 2012. Although tonight’s fixture is not the official Derby Day (See: http://www.villagerfc.co.za/news/140th-derby-day-announcement/) one would not expect to see anything less from the players and spectators on either side when playing against long-standing competitive rivals.
The visitors from Brookside have their work cut out for them tonight against the high flying Hamiltons side who have an envious record thus far including finishing 3rd in the Cell C Community Cup earlier this year and having annihilated a young Victorians side and UWC by over 70 points each and beaten Primrose by 20 points two weeks ago.
Although Villager are still a side that is finding it’s feet in the SLA once again, the team will desperately want to turn around last weeks defeat at home and put one over their rivals, who it must be said have had the upper hand in both league games and Derby Day fixtures over the Brooksiders for the past decade.
Former Racing Metro loose forward and Villager Captain Ashley Clarke believes that they can overturn the record books tonight.
“Look Hammies are a good side and we must respect that, but we are definitely a side that can upset them if we believe we can and stick to our strengths for the whole 80 minutes.” He says.
“In my entire career I’ve never seen a side that cannot be beaten, with that said however we will have to deliver our absolute best tonight and leave nothing out there because the Hammies boys won’t just lie down and accept losing, we’ll have to claim it through our desire and superior performance.” Clarke continued.
Although the Brooksiders are bullish about tonight their task has been made somewhat harder with the withdrawal of star flank Jannie Bester and hard running wing Brent Sanders through injury. The other notable omission being hooker Scott Pitcher who is on suspension owing to his Red Card dismissal last weekend.
Thankfully Villager are able to call upon exciting young talents from the WP Rugby Academy in the likes of Renier Scholtz who moves to flank from lock replacing Bester and Damian Rawstorne on the wing who replaces Sanders. While Brandon Henning and Kelsey Tait get the call up from u20 and the 2nds respectively to sit on the bench.
The other changes see’s College Rovers veteran Ryan Le Roux being called up to start at lock while EP and USA Eagles squad representative Eddie Galpin starts at scrumhalf after an exciting cameo from the bench last week. Flyhalf also see’s a change with Daniel Clarke swapping with Trent Jenkinson who moves back to inside centre.
Villager Head Coach, Gunner Hughes, believes last week was a good reality check for his squad.
“Tygerberg proved to us that in this league you cannot play badly and still win as we did last year. Each game is a difficult challenge and we must be able to perform at a high level each week to be in a position to win.” He says.
“Hammies is our first game against the so called ‘top 6’, so we will have to be at our very best, but with the team we currently have, combined with our depth on the bench, I believe we can upset teams we are not expected to beat this year. It just comes down to our execution on the day.” Hughes continued.
Villager looks forward to renewing our rivalry with Hamiltons and invites our members to attend the fixtures at Green Point which start at 18:35 with the 3rds and culminates with the 1st XV game at 21:00. See you there!
