Well done to our Villager 1XV for their win on Saturday. It is never easy to come back from 2 consecutive defeats and then take on the league leaders. But, they did just that and displayed true Villager character in grinding out a necessary win that keeps us in the league title race.
Saturday was a special day at Brookside as it displayed all that is good at club level and also at Villagers. Healthy competition between the teams of Villagers and Helderberg, high intensity clash between WP U19 and Free State U19, great crowd support, a packed clubhouse with friendly fun and much laughter amongst players, team managements, wives, girlfriends, friends and visitors. And then there were the special reunions of Anton van Vlaanderen’s fighting Fourths and Bossie Clarke’s trophy-winning 1981 1XV. It is always good to welcome past players back to the club and the invisible bond that ties the ex-players together in these reunions is so evident.
For the record, Saturday’s results were as follows:
1XV won 19 -14.
2XV lost 7 -21.
3XV won 19 -10.
U20A lost 0 -26.
WP U19 won 28 -17.
Our next (and last) home match will take place at Brookside against Bellville on Saturday 12 August 2017. It would be wonderful if we could enjoy the same spectator and support turnout that we enjoyed this past Saturday.Your attendance and support just makes everything seem so worthwhile and it is indeed appreciated by the players and the club. The league season only has 1 month to go with 1 home match – let’s make that home match special and a highlight of the 2017 season.
Unfortunately, the Stormers season ended at Newlands against the Chiefs. But the team has come a long way under Robbie Fleck in a short space of time and the future is bright if the bulk of the current players are retained (it took the Lions 5 years to get to where they are today). There is no break as the players will now go into the Currie Cup as WP – this coming Sunday they are away to Free State Cheetahs.
Don’t forget that Friday is Red Socks Day for all associated with Villagers. Let’s receive photos of you wearing your red socks for us to post on our social media platforms. Hope you all enjoy a great week and let’s hold thumbs that the Proteas will come out firing against England.
