Villager Voice #1

Greetings to 2014 from VFC

Villager wishes you all a happy and prosperous new year. 2014 is going to be an exciting one for Villager as we start a new chapter in the clubs history with a fresh, talented and very extensive compliment of coaches, managers and support staff (33 in total), a group of young players with one tough season behind them and 90% of them returning in 2014, a few new players who are keen to be part of something special, a full team of dedicated committee members with the necessary skills to take us forward, some innovative new ideas for the pub and facilities, a brand new rugby gym in the Dungeon (see below) and a few more things that we will keep you updated on as we go.

Even with the disappointing rugby season we had last year the vibe and atmosphere in the club is the best it has been for years. We can honestly say that we are on track in building a club where people want to be and to be a part of. With all this said however it is only the start and there is lots of hard work and challenges on the horizon.

We are going to try our best to keep you informed as much as possible during the course of the year. If for whatever reason you don’t want to know what is going on or feel that you have moved past Villager then please just reply to this email and let us know. No hard feelings. We totally understand.

Lynn Fraser – our passionate new treasurer who happens to be the much better half of our rugby chairman Bruce Fraser. Lynn has done a fantastic job in 2013 helping the club with the accounts. It was a no-brainer to offer her this prestigious position. We thank her for accepting and really appreciate all she did for the club in 2013.

Scotty Slight – Scotty runs the Brooksider Grill which is now next door to the pub. Scotty had an excellent 2013 providing exactly what we were looking for from a catering perspective. His ideas and different angle on things is going to be invaluable to our committee in 2014.

Ross Williams – If you ever want to meet a passionate rugby person then Ross is your man. Ross joins us as a specialist coach but also happens to have exceptional marketing skills, limitless energy and was the brain behind the brand new website.

Trevor Kidd – Trevor comes on to assist us primarily with our sponsorship’s but his business experience and wise words are the real attraction for our young committee.

Lionel Jacques – Lionel is without a doubt one of the most ardent Villager supporters in the world. He has been a supporter since childhood and has been invaluable to the club in the last few years. He is the “housemaster” of the player accommodation and comes on the rugby committee to assist with events and functions.

Due to the sheer number of new staff we will introduce them in groups over the next few newsletters. For this newsletter we will start with the 1st team coaches.

Andrew “Gunner” Hughes – Gunner joins us on the back of a very successful 12 year stint coaching the UCT 20A’s. The work he has put in since joining in September 2013 has been immense. Gunner is a teacher at Western Province Preparatory School (WPPS).

Kirsten Marshall – Kirsten joined us halfway through last season and assisted Bruce with the 1st team. He coached for a number of years with Gunner at UCT and did a spectacular job in helping Bruce in putting the pieces together and ending off the 2013 season on a morale high. Kirsten is a teacher at SACS Junior School.

Riaan Crous – Riaan also assisted Gunner at UCT and joins us with a strong coaching pedigree. Riaan is a teacher at WPPS.

Graham Lindemann – Graham remains from the 2013 coaching staff. Passionate about all things rugby Graham is a VFC stalwart and will add immense value to the 1st team setup. Graham is an entrepreneur.

We also would like to welcome our new 5th team to the club “The Shebeen Boys”. The Shebeen Boys join us from the UCT internal League and have over the years helped us out on a number of occasions with players here and there. We look forward to building a relationship with them. Please make yourselves at home guys!

Rugby Update & Friendly Fixtures

Pre-season kicked off towards the end of last year with 6 weeks of touch rugby, twice per week. The idea was to keep the guys active and integrate some of the new players into the club. The turnouts for that time of the year were nothing short of spectacular and even managed to beat our “contract days” with anything between 25 and 45 players per evening. This bodes very well for 2014. The proper pre-season starts on Monday 20 January so if you keen to get fit nice and early please make your way down.

The friendly fixtures for 2014:

MONDAY 17th FEB – Usalta (Argentinian touring side) (Home – Night game)

TUESDAY 25th FEB – Sante Fe (Argentinian touring side) (Home – Night game)

SATURDAY 1 MAR – Hindu (Argentinian touring side) (Home – Afternoon game)

SATURDAY 8 MAR – Helderberg (Home – Afternoon game)

SATURDAY 22 MAR – Belville (Away – Afternoon game)

Unfortunately with Hamilton’s being involved in the Community Cup we have had to postpone the derby to later in the season. We will keep you updated with regards to this.

In addition to the above we will have 4 teams representing us at the Cape Town Tens at Hamiltons including – 2 Villager Senior Section teams, The Fourths and a team that goes by the name of “Kraken”. The tournament runs over 7 & 8 February so if you make your way down look out for us.

New Gym

In partnership with Keith Power, our new club biokinetisist, VFC have taken the first step towards owning its very own top class rugby gym facility, now based in the Dungeon. Keith, a professional personal trainer, will be operating his business from the facility. The gym is available to all rugby and gym members free of charge. We are very excited about this new development and thank Keith for all he has done to make this happen. Please see some pictures below:

Newlands Box

For those of you who didn’t know Villager has its own exclusive access to a box at Newlands. It is a blind box which means that it doesn’t view the rugby but do not worry as we have first rights on 24 tickets in the Danie Craven stand for every game at Newlands. Besides not viewing the rugby it has all the amenities of a normal box with a bar, TV and DSTV and some nostalgic Village memorabilia hanging up. Over the years we have leased it out to members on a game by game basis but due to the logistics involved in doing this we feel that the most practical way going forward would be to sell the rights on a season by season basis to one of our members’ businesses or a member or syndicate of members who would like it to entertain friends. It’s great for entertaining in general whether it be friends or clients. For the season, including the SUPER XV, Currie Cup and Test Matches we are looking to lease it out for R25,000 (this excludes the tickets for the games, these can be bought on a game by game basis). Please give it some serious thought as the first Super XV game at Newlands is the Hurricanes on the 28th of February. If you are interested please contact Warren Sargeant on 0767746463.

Golf Day

We are very happy to announce that we will be re-launching the Villager Golf Day in 2014. In 2012 we had a very successful day at Mowbray Golf Club so are going to give it another go there. It would be great to have as many members on the fairways as possible. How about getting some old Village mates together and reminiscing about playing days? Please see the details below:

When: Sunday 23 February

Where: Mowbray Golf Club

Price: R400 for members (includes green fees & lunch) – discounted rate for current players, single entries welcome

To Book: Please reply to this email or contact Richard Gill on 0834634230.

There are also green and tee box sponsorship opportunities. If your company would like further information regarding this please contact Richard Gill on the above number or at Richard@corp-golf.co.za.

Thank You’s

A few of our members have gone above the call of duty over the last few months and special thanks must go to them:

Members:

Dave Edwards and George Snowball – Dave and George did an exceptional job with the new gym in painting, laying the floor, mounting pull up bars and ropes etc etc.  In addition to this they hardly had a holiday over Christmas as the water pump broke and had to make a number of plans to get it going in the stifling heat.

Lionel Jacques – Lionel spent a good portion of the Christmas period cleaning up and painting the players accommodation for the new boarders in 2014. Thanks Lionel and great job.

Ross Williams – Being as passionate on rugby as he is Ross spent his holiday visiting rugby clubs in Europe and creating Villager ties with them. This was all for his own account. Thanks Ross.

Dennis Nick – Dennis made a very generous contribution to the club which went a long way towards giving us the opportunity in setting up the new gym. Thank you Dennis, your morale support, guidance and fresh ideas have been fantastic over the last few months.

Companies:

Dulux – Dulux contributed many litres of paint free of charge so that we could give the gym and accommodation a new lick. Thanks Dulux.

ESET Southern Africa – ESET, a Cape Town based internet security (antivirus) software distributor, have kindly committed to another year of sponsorship. Their support over the last couple of years has been brilliant and we encourage all our members to consider their great products whenever their antivirus protection comes up for renewal, whether it is for your business or home. You can go to www.eset.co.za to see more.

That’s all for now. Our next newsletter will be out in a couple of weeks so please look out for it.

Kind Regards

VFC
