Villager Voice #2

Greetings to 2014 from VFC

The last 2 weeks have just flown by at VFC. There is lots on the go and the club is humming with activity. Pre-season training started this week with attendances at levels not seen in 20 years. We had 60 players on both Monday and Tuesday night with lots of new faces and an incredible vibe. The coaching management have done a great job in emphasising the clubs values and setting the tone. The best news is that it seems the players are responding and buying in. It’s very early days though but the signs are good. The Fourths, our mighty social side, have also been hard at work in training for the Cape Town Tens with solid numbers and putting in even harder work at the bar.

Club Night

On Thursday 23 January (tonight) we will be launching our inaugural rugby club night. The idea behind the night is to create a bit of “club gees” in the rugby section. Activities will kick-off after practice from 8pm with a weekly draw for a bar tab at the VFC pub. The draw will happen without fail at 8:30pm. All rugby club members (playing and non-playing) will go into the weekly draw and if your name is drawn you will win the tab. There are a few T&C’s however:

  • you have to be present to win it, in other words if your name is drawn and you are not physically present to claim the prize you lose out.
  • You have to have showered after practice or gym club J

Should the prize not be claimed on a night it will be rolled over to the following Thursday and bumped up by R100. This will keep happening until the tab is eventually won.

We will also be offering a burger and beer or cooldrink special between 8pm and 8:30pm. All bottled beers and cooldrinks R10 and a Burger and Chips R30.

Introduction to new Coaching Staff

As mentioned in the previous newsletter we will be introducing the new coaching staff in groups over the next few newsletters. This week we have the 2nd team coaching staff:

Lups Tuswa Lups is an ex-Villager player who we are very happy to welcome home. Since departing VFC for greener pastures Lups was involved with Gunner in the UCT U20 section. A more passionate rugby and club man you cannot find.  Lups is a teacher at Western Province Preparatory School (WPPS).

George Wienekus George is a born and bred Eastern Caper who has been involved in schoolboy coaching since 2006. A true family man who enjoys tanning the odd chop with some sport on the telly.  George played provincial rugby for Border and is currently a teacher at SACS.

Phil Quma Phil is also an Eastern Caper who comes with a distinguished provincial school playing career. He joins us with coaching experience under Gunner at UCT.  Phil is currently a technical advisor at WPPS and studying to become a teacher.

Welcome to VFC guys and best of luck for the season ahead.

Golf Day

Please get back to us ASAP if you would like to join us on Sunday the 23rd of February at Mowbray Golf Club for the golf day. It promises to be a great day out. The field is filling up nicely so don’t miss out. A reminder of details below:

When: Sunday 23 February

Where: Mowbray Golf Club

Price: R1,600 per 4 ball (includes green fees & lunch) – discounted rate for current players, single entries welcome

To Book: Please reply to this email or contact Dave at 0216836704.

Sponsorship: If you would like to sponsor on the day we are offering R1,000 sponsorship per hole. This will give you branding on the tee and/or green.

Newlands Box

Our Newlands Box is till up for grabs for the season. We have had some interest in the syndication option so it looks like the plan is to syndicate it to 5 parties. Should you wish to become a part of the syndication it will cost you R5,000 for the season (Super XV, Currie Cup and Tests) and would entitle you to 5 tickets/spaces per game. A great option for anyone who entertains clients on a regular basis or a guy who is just keen to have bragging rights with his mates that he owns a box at Newlands J.

Thank You’s

This week’s thank you’s and praises go to Gunner and his coaching staff for the incredible recruitment effort that was put in off-season. As mentioned it’s still early days but so far so good. Thanks guys.
