In last Monday’s newsletter you were informed about the 1XV trip to Clanwilliam as part of this season’s team building exercise. However, the Under 20’s form a most important section of the club and Mo and SP (the Under 20 coaches) have put together a well-planned 2-day camp at Brookside on 25/26 February. The camp will start at 09h00 on the Saturday and there will be fitness and skills sessions until 17h00. Thereafter the players will be involved in a fun team session in the Clubhouse followed by supper. The players will retire early and sleep at the Academy after which it will be up early for transport to the slopes of Table Mountain where they will “enjoy” the run at 06h00 up to and around the infamous pimple. It will then be back to Brookside for breakfast and no doubt a tired departure.
The DHL Stormers have enjoyed 3 very successful pre-season matches and let us all hold thumbs that this will stand them in good stead when the Super Rugby league commences. It is sad to hear about the injuries sustained by Leolin Zas (broken leg – out for season) and Juan de Jongh (torn knee ligament – out for 10 to 12 weeks). It is a concern that in modern-day rugby the match intensity, size of players and high-speed collisions are resulting in more and more traumatic long term injuries. We, however, wish the players well with their rehabilitation and also pass on our best Villager wishes to Robbie Fleck for his first league match against the Bulls and also for all the other matches thereafter.
When you are next down at the Clubhouse you will see 2 new draught beer taps at the bar. Saggy Stone, a craft beer brewery, has kindly come forward as an associate sponsor and will also sponsor the Player-of-the-Day awards that will be made to a player from each team when matches are played at Brookside. Please support Saggy Stone and try their on tap Big Red and California Steam. A big thanks to Saggy Stone who we welcome to the Villager family.
Club 100 will again meet in the Clubhouse on Thursday 23 February 2017 at 19h00. The guest speakers will be Gavin Cowley and Marcello Fiasconaro who both made their marks on the sportsfield in rugby and athletics respectively and in sport business having been with adidas. We are looking forward to a fun-filled evening and if you have not yet become a member of Club 100 and you wish to do so, please contact this office.
Two reminders! Firstly, the 2017 subscriptions are now due (R500 for a non-playing member) which ensures membership until the end of December 2017. Your current membership cards will still allow for discount at the bar until the end of February 2017 after which the card will be de-activated if you have not renewed your 2017 membership. Secondly, the 2017 Villager merchandise range is quite special and can be viewed on the Villager website. Let’s all put our famous brand out there by wearing the new funky Villager clothing items.
Thanks to Donald Crawford and Doug Abbott for forwarding the photo of themselves wearing their red socks this past Friday on the ski slopes of Chatel Rhone-Alpes in France. What wonderful Villager spirit and loyalty!!
In closing, remember if you are having a tough week and nothing is going right, go left!!
