The Villager FC began the 2017 league season in emphatic fashion. The hard work put in by the players during the off-season was rewarded and we now have a fine platform from which we can attack the rest of the season. To play away against Sir Lowrians is not at all easy and the coaches, team management and players must take a bow for their preparation of the respective teams. The 1XV were good, but there is still much work to be done as a number of tries were “left out there”. However, we will approach each match on its merits and as a final with the knowledge that with each match there must be an improvement. The results against Sir Lowrians this past Saturday were as follows:
1XV won 52 -11.
2XV won 12 -7.
3XV won 12 -7.

Thank you to those members of Club 100 who attended the monthly meeting last Thursday. It was good to welcome Derek Kohler, Jeremy Pinn and Mike Gluckman, classy backline players from the successful 1980 and 1981 1XV teams. It is interesting to note that the players “feel” the unity at these gatherings and acknowledge the need to uphold the rich tradition of the Villager FC. Arnie Mohr presented a Villager tie to Clinton van Rensburg, 1XV Head Coach, who responded by saying that he views the handing over of the tie as symbolic of receiving the club colours which must be hoisted and held high with each match played. The two bottles of wine that were part of the lucky draw were won by John Armstrong and Erik van Vlaanderen, but the monetary draw was again not claimed and will be held over for the next draw at the meeting on Tuesday 25 April 2017.
Brookside hosted the WP provincial team and the WP Institute team last Tuesday and Thursday. The two teams played against the WP Academy team who are resident at the club. There certainly are talented players – which was evident in the WP team when they convincingly defeated the Pumas at Newlands on Saturday – in both the senior team and at the Institute and the future of WP rugby is bright.
This coming Saturday 8 April 2017 Villagers will be hosting Young Peoples from Paarl at Brookside. The matches are scheduled for the following times:
1XV 15h30 A Field.
2XV 14h10 A Field.
3XV 13h05 A Field.
Under 20A 12H55 B Field.
As this will be our first home match of the season, let’s make it a memorable occasion and turn up in large numbers to support our club. It will be most special to the 1XV when they run on to the A Field with a strong Villager support around the field. And let’s stay for a drink after the match so that our clubhouse is vibrant and filled with the Villager energy. We only play 7 home matches in a season and it is certainly not a big ask, in what is a long year, for us to come down to Brookside and attend those home matches.
Hope you enjoy a fabulous week and looking forward to see you at Brookside on Saturday.
