Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful long weekend. Unfortunately, these weekends are now something of the past and normal weeks will be the order of the day until 16 June – not too long though for another breather!
This coming Saturday 6 May 2017 Villagers will be playing against Rangers at Brookside. Please come down to the club and support your team and assist in building the Villager match day spirit. The 1XV needs to win this fixture to keep the forward momentum as they strive to make it 4 wins from 4 matches. There are no “easy” teams in our league and spectator support certainly gives the players a lift on match day. Stay on after the matches and enjoy the Saggy Stone Player-of-the-Day Awards and the Super Rugby matches on the television screens whilst enjoying a beer with friends. The kickoff times for the matches are as follows:
1XV A Field 16h00.
2XV A Field 14h45.
U20A A Field 13h35.
3XV B Field 13h35.
This past weekend Wynberg Boys High School hosted a rugby tournament for schools some of whom traveled from different parts of the country. It was a great advertisement for schoolboy rugby, enjoyed great spectator attendance and a credit to the organisers from WBHS. At the same time in Kimberley, the Wilderklawer Schools Tournament took place and again demonstrated all the great aspects seen at Wynberg. What is quite apparent having watched matches from both tournaments is that South African rugby is blessed with amazing schoolboy talent and the question that one must ask is why are we ever out of the top 2 at any level in world rugby?
The April Club 100 get-together was a wonderful evening and our sincere thanks go to Howie Kahn, Charl Marais and John Dobson. There were humorous stories and also thought-provoking insights into the modern game of rugby. A pleasing aspect of the talks endorsed by our guests is that Villagers is certainly on the right track when it comes to our approach to amateur club rugby. The next Club 100 function will take place in the Clubhouse on Thursday 25 May 2017.
There are many past players who we have yet to see down at Brookside this year. We would love to welcome you at the club for a chat and a beer. There are 3 home Saturday matches this May and it would be great if you can see your way clear to visit the club.
