Villager Voice 2017 – 031

Dear Villager

Congratulations to the Villager 1XV. The team needed to win with 4 log points to ensure promotion to Super League A in 2018. The players turned it on in this past Saturday’s last league match and produced a performance worthy of promotion. The final score was 42 -17 in our favour and 5 log points were secured. Despite the unfortunate off-field incidents that took place before the 1XV match, the players remained calm and kept their focus to ensure a memorable victory.

The 1XV have left their mark and a legacy for 2017. All our home matches were won and Brookside became a fortress and, despite our 3 away losses, we managed to secure bonus points in those losses. Two standout victories were against the strong teams of Helderberg (home) and Hamlets (away) – these were must-win games against opponents who were vying with Villagers for Super League A promotion. However, it must not be forgotten that the 2XV, 3XV and U20A all contributed to the success.

It is appropriate to say a huge thank you to the coaches, managers, fitness and conditioning coach, biokinetist, physiotherapist and players (of all the teams), title sponsor eset and all our other sponsors, non-playing members, Club 100 members, supporters and those who assisted but chose to remain anonymous. You were all part of a collective effort (which will not be forgotten) in the drive towards Super League A of which the club is indeed sincerely appreciative. Also, a thank you to all the many, many messages of congratulations – too many to thank individually – on email, whatsapp, sms and telephonically – each one is most meaningful!

The reality now is that the “hard work” will immediately commence in our position of a Super League A club. It is unthinkable to be up in 2018 and back down in 2019!!! The Villager FC is a famous club with a rich history and tradition stretching over 141 years and must always participate in the top club competition in the Western Province. Numerous meetings must now take place with various role players to strategise and ensure the longevity of the club. It really is not the case of the Villager FC Main Committee and administration “doing it alone” – if ever there is a need for the greater Villager family it is now!

Again, a reminder of the Villager Golf Day which will take place this Thursday at the Rondebosch Golf Club. We need your support and you can still enter by contacting Kim on 0832358033 or on

Brookside will be hosting 2 Sevens Tournaments this Thursday (31 August) and Friday (1 September). On Thursday (kickoff at 18h30) is the annual Old Boys’ Sevens between old boys from Rondebosch Boys’ High, Wynberg Boys’ High, SACS and Bishops. Then on Friday (starting time 14h40) is the annual 49th Villager Schools’ Sevens Tournament with 24 teams participating. If you are at a loose end and feel like watching exciting sevens rugby, pop down to Villagers and enjoy a drink and some fun time.

Thank you again for all your support these past few months. The 1XV will now participate in the knockout President’s Cup Competition and will play in a semi final at home on Saturday 9 September 2017. Please diarise the date and we hope to see you then or at the sevens tournaments.

Kind regards.

VFC Rugby Administration.
