So much has being going on behind the scenes as we plan for participation in the Super League A in 2018. There certainly has been no time to breathe as the challenges are enormous if the club is to be competitive and avoid the relegation battle at the end of the 2018 season. Villagers is an A league club and must remain there!!!
As was forwarded to you, it was most sad to hear about the passing of Lionel Wilson. The “Big 4” – Lionel, Doug Hopwood, John Gainsford and Dave Stewart – were special to Villagers, but time does march on and now we have said goodbye to 3 of the 4 famous Villager men. No doubt that John and Doug are again pleading with “Speedy” Wilson to run with the ball and pass before he kicks!
We are currently investigating doing a possible facelift to the clubhouse to make it more inviting, comfortable and hospitable. The decor is now looking most tired, the floor is in need of repair and the idea is to create an environment which will attract more visitors to the clubhouse and not only on match Saturdays. Villagers, unfortunately, lost its old clubhouse on the eastern side of Brookside. But we cannot dwell in the past, but should rather be pro-active and get the clubhouse “gees” back again. Hopefully, the upgrade will become a reality.
Not really quite sure what to say about the Springboks at the moment. What is clear is that they do lack experience in key critical positions and there is no real “X factor” player. The famous ground of Newlands now awaits and, hopefully, the test match on Saturday will be similar to the SA vs NZ clashes at Newlands of the past – tense, physical, great atmosphere, and a close result.
Please diarise the AGM which will be held in the Clubhouse on Wednesday 25 October 2017 at 18h30. Notice of the meeting has been forwarded and please note that only members may attend the meeting.
That’s it then. Enjoy the rest of the week. Hold thumbs for the Boks – you never know!! And see you on the 13th.
