Villager Voice 2018 – 010

Dear Villager

A quiet past weekend for the Villager players, but the practices continue as we prepare for the False Bay matches on Saturday 7 April. The venue is still to be finalised. Then on Saturday 21 April we will play UniMil at Milnerton High School. The players continue to be focussed with high energy levels despite the disappointment of no league rugby.

Well, it might have been quiet for Villagers, but the sporting world is abuzz at the antics of the Australian cricketers. It was always going to be a fiery series and up to Saturday it certainly did not disappoint. But then came Saturday and the blatant ball-tampering in an attempt to win the test match. The actions of the Australian cricketers soured everything that is good about cricket and sport in general. It has left a sour taste in the mouth and the final test match has been muddied by this extraordinary bad behaviour. How can the guilty individuals remain role models as so many people – young and old – have now been disappointed and let down by their acts of disrepect for the game?? Astonishing!!

On the Super Rugby front, it was disappointing that 3 SA teams lost. The Stormers were the sole SA winners and they certainly were involved in a real physical contest with a number of off-the-ball incidents. Match officials must take action against this type of play particularly with all the technology available to them. The tackle by a Reds’ player on Craig Barry was very ugly and he could have incurred a serious injury.

The club did report on the sad passing away of Denzil Bester – another club stalwart and past 1XV scrumhalf to whom we have to bid farewell. The family will be holding a wake for Denzil in the Villager clubhouse this Wednesday 28 March at 15h00. All are invited for drinks and snacks, to share stories and to remember a life lived to its fullest.

Hope you all have an enjoyable long weekend and if you are going away take care on the roads. For those of you who are in Cape Town, why not pop down to the clubhouse on Saturday and watch the Stormers in their away     match against the Bulls? First class food and drinks in the new Saggy Stone Villager Restaurant/Bar !!!

Kind regards.

Rob Wagner.
