Villager Voice 2018 – 011

Dear Villager

With autumn slowly creeping up on the Western Cape and temperatures starting to fall, there is again hope that soon black rain clouds will be dumping water on the parched city. And hopefully that will mean the start of the club rugby league competition at the beginning of June. In keeping with tradition the pre-league Derby Day has been scheduled for Brookside for Saturday 26 May 2018.

Villagers and False Bay will be playing a friendly match this Saturday 7 April 2018 at 15h00. The venue will be the top field (Meadow Field) at Rondebosch Boys’ High. After the match both teams will make their way back to Brookside to enjoy eats and drinks in the new clubhouse and to watch the Stormers in their away match against the Lions. So make a turn at Rondebosch or pop down to Villagers to enjoy good “old-fashioned” rugby cameraderie, friendship and fun.

South African sport is firmly in the spotlight again with the resounding success of the Proteas against Australia in what will be a never-to-be-forgotten cricket series. Also, Villagers wishes all our athletes who are competing in the Commonwealth Games the very best and we certainly will be holding thumbs that our Blitsbokke can bring home gold.

A sad past week is now behind us with the passing of Denzil Bester and Keith Kolesky. The wake for Denzil in the clubhouse was very well attended and the Villager spirit was strongly to the fore as family, past team mates and friends paid their respects. It was emotionally proud as a Villager member to have known Denzil. We are indeed a unique “family”!!

A kind reminder about member subscriptions!  The R500 for a non-playing member is now payable and the club again makes an appeal to all to surpass our 2017 membership numbers. This is a crucial source of income for the club and the backbone of any club’s (rugby or non-rugby) existence. It certainly is not an exorbitant fee and an income source which has enabled generations of players in our 142 year history to play rugby at Brookside. Therefore, let us all allow the current group of players to enjoy the privilege of playing for Villagers.

Kind regards.

Rob Wagner.
