It has been some time since the last newsletter and the year is fast drawing to a close. It does seem like yesterday that Eddie Jones was at the club when he gave us insights into the England team and the year that lay ahead for them. Time certainly does not wait for any man!
It was pleasing that at the Villager FC AGM a vote of confidence was demonstrated by the members and that the 2018 Main Committee (who have done sterling work under difficult circumstances) were re-elected en bloc. The members for 2019 are thus as follows:
|Deputy Chairman||John Owen-Hughes|
|Treasurer||Kim Du Plessis|
|Additional Member||Pete Smith|
|Additional Member||Peter Simmons|
We thank these members for all the hours sacrificed in 2018 and wish them well for the 2019 Super League A Competition. Congratulations must also go to Bossie Clarke who was unanimously accepted as a Vice President of the Villager FC in recognition for all his years of service as President of the Villager FC.
A missing link in 2019 will be ESET who after many years as the title sponsor of the Villager FC has decided that it is time to hand over the reigns. A huge thanks must go to Erik and Anton van Vlaanderen for their special support of the club and we look forward to their future visits to Brookside. We are now tirelessly seeking a replacement sponsor without whom we will not be able to operate.
The 2018 club rugby season officially ended with the club sevens this past Saturday. We, unfortunately, were knocked out by our old friend and rival Hamiltons in the quarter finals. Congratulations must, however, go to Tygerberg who are this year’s deserved sevens club champions. And so it’s on to the 2019 season and a start will be made on Wednesday when the Villager players will come in for fitness and conditioning assessments. Their off-season programmes will be essential as they prepare for the very tough Super League A fixtures which will commence on 6 April 2019.
A confirmed 2019 pre-season friendly will be away on Saturday 16 March 2019 against Uni-Mil in what will be the first time the 2 clubs contest annually for the David Karon Trophy. David was the President of the Union-Milnerton RFC who sadly and very suddenly passed away recently. Villagers and Hamiltons are currently in discussion of staging Derby Day at Hamiltons on Saturday 30 March 2019. We will keep you posted once finalised.
Saggy Stone Villagers has been very busy these past few weeks with a number of unique events. The specials on offer at the restaurant and pub are well worth a visit to the club. This Wednesday sees the second Charlie Marais music quiz night – the first was most successful – where teams of 6 do battle against each other in a fun-filled evening of music. Get your team together and come down to Brookside – you can enter your team at the door on the night. There have been good attendances for the November Springbok matches which has seen (maybe not yet perfect) a Springbok team which is competitive and slowly getting back the self-belief to win matches at international level. And don’t forget the annual Piet Geldenhuys lunch on Friday 7 December 2018 – always a special event with much fun and laughter!!
We will soon be going on our membership drive for next season. It was decided at the AGM that the annual non-playing membership subs will remain at R500 as in 2018. But there will now be worthwhile benefits for those who renew their memberships for 2019 – you will be informed of these benefits in due course.
Hope you are all gearing up for the Cape Town festive season which is around the corner. To all of you take care and all of the very best.
