Villager Voice 2019 – 041

Dear Villager

A very big and warm Villager best wishes to all Villagers for 2019. May it be a year of fun, laughter and success. I’m sure you all enjoyed the festive season with your loved ones and that you are well-rested for the year that lies ahead.

As the Villager FC enters its 143rd year, there is much excitement as we enter year 2 of our 3 year Super League A plan. Last year, having retained Super League A status, it was all about cementing our position in the province’s premier league competition. The coaching team and players had to dig deep, but the true Villager spirit came to the fore and our year 1 objective was achieved.

As was reported in the last newsletter, this year we welcome Kevin van Rensburg to Villagers as 1XV Head Coach. Kevin brings a wealth of coaching experience from KZN where he successfully coached the Amanzimtoti RFC in the KZN Premier A League. Official training for all players will commence at Brookside on Monday 14 January 2019 at 18h00.

Sadly, we had to bid farewell to a number of Villager members who passed away over the festive season. Our sincere condolences go out to the families of Peter Stiles, Bert Versveld, Rod Dunbar and Johnny Cawood. It was also sad to hear of the passing of Issy Trope, a great Union player in his day.

This coming Sunday 13 January 2019 Brookside will again host the Sunday Food and Social Market from 11am to 7pm. This will be the second such market, the first having been successfully staged last year on 16 December. So pop down to Villagers if you are at a loose end at any stage during the course of this coming Sunday. Also, please note that the Saggy Stone Villager Restaurant and Pub is now open as normal. An evening beer on the deck as the sun sets behind our beautiful Table Mountain is always a most enjoyable and peaceful experience!!!

Last year we staged a most successful and fun-filled Villager Golf Day with many great prizes at the Rondebosch Golf Club. Please diarise Friday 1 March 2019 when we will again host our Golf Day at the same venue. Last year was quite special,  but let’s make this year even bigger and better with a bumper attendance. Well, that’s it for the 2019 opening. Your support this year will be most appreciated as we as a club strive to be the best – both off and on the field!! Thank you for your support in the past, but now let us truly unite, let bygones be bygones and come together in 2019 to make it most memorable for the Villager players who will proudly wear that famous white jersey.

Again, all of the best for 2019!!!

Kind regards.

Rob Wagner.
