Villager Voice 2019 – 043

Dear Villager

Not long to go now before the first pre-season Villager friendly against Helderberg (away) on Saturday 9 March 2019. The players are hard at work under our new coach, Kevin van Rensburg, and there are a number of exciting new faces. However, we do hope that these players will commit to Villagers for the season. An unfortunate occurrence in WP club rugby is that players do tend to “shop around” before committing and registering with a specific club. A possible solution to this ugly problem is that the cut-off date determined by the WPRFU for final player registrations should be made earlier in the WP.

The Varsity Cup kicked off yesterday with wins for the Maties over Wits and a very close win for UCT over UWC. Jordan Chait, son of Anton, is playing flyhalf for Maties and we wish him well during the competition. Whilst on family, Gerhard’s nephew, Nic Witte (son of Thomas), is at the WP Rugby Academy this year and will be playing for the Villager U20s this season.

As you might have heard that Villagers stalwart, Dave Edwards, is back in the administration saddle at Brookside. We wish him all of the very best and we hope that Villagers goes from strength to strength under his watch.

For those of you who were at Cape Town Stadium this past Saturday it would have been clear that the Cape Town support of rugby is still the best in South Africa. The stadium rocked (especially during the Stormers vs Bulls match) despite the fact that the matches were pre-season friendlies and that no trophy was up for grabs. What was noticeable was the high number of young children who were present and the idea of the Marvel characters proved to be a winner! The Stormers certainly have depth this year as was evident in that none of their current Springboks were in action and, hopefully, this will be a good season for the Western Cape.

In closing, it will soon be time to renew your annual Villager membership of R500 – as matches start in March the R500 is equivalent to R71,43 a month until the end of the season in September!!!!!!!!!! So please make a mental note as membership monies are crucial to the well-being of your club.

All of the best.

Kind regards.

VFC RUGBY ADMINISTRATION.
