Villager Voice #7

VILLAGE VOICE – 07/2014

Good day to you all. This is the week we have all been waiting for as the first game of the season approaches this coming Saturday. As of Saturday pre-season comes to an end and the real business starts. You can feel the excitement and nervous energy in the club. A massive amount of work has gone into what is looking to be a year of great promise and growth for our great club. Following on from this we are very happy and proud to announce that we have registered 224 players for the 2014 season. This is an extraordinary number of players and must be a Villager record of sorts in the professional era of our club. As it stands we have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd team, two social sides, the 4ths and the 5ths (Shebeen Boys), and an U20 side. Well done to Gunner and his coaching and management staff for this incredible achievement.

Belville Friendly

On Saturday the 22nd of March the club ventured off to Belville for a friendly pre-season game. Once again we challenged ourselves with tough opposition as Belville will be taking part in the Super A league this season. The results:

1st team: W 20-10

2nd team: L 10-14

3rd team: L 0-7

u/20: L 24-26

The first team dominated the majority of the game in all areas and in the end came out victors. Our strong, physical pack were exceptional as they muscled their opponents out of the game. For the dominance we showed the result probably was not a fair reflection. With that said however Belville-Tech never gave up, defended like trojans and their backs showed some exceptional skills and speed. All in all it was an encouraging result against quality opposition and a great day out.

The other teams put up strong performances with the U20’s looking very good being 24-7 up at half time only to lose 26-24. A good game to have as a friendly.

Bring on Macassar on Saturday!!!

Night with the Legends followed by Club Night

Tomorrow night (Thursday) we will be kicking off our first instalment of the “Night with the Legends”. The idea behind the evening is to expose the players to Villager players and members of the past. We feel that our history is one our most treasured assets and the people that make the history are the members of days gone by. For this particular evening we will be graced with the presence of Dave Stewart, Roy Macullum, Piet Geldenhuys and John Gainsford. The evening will kick off at 8pm and will be followed by club night at 8:30pm. Please see attached the flyer.

Regarding club night we have a R1,400 bar tab looking to be claimed so it could be someone’s lucky night. Last week Luke Wesgarth-Taylor was drawn but as seems to be a trend at the moment he had left just before the draw. Rugby players never seem to learn.

Some of you might have seen that Hammies announced yesterday that we were merging with them and in so doing they were moving to Brookside. This was an April Fool’s joke.
