The 2014 season has kicked off in full force and all in all it’s been a great start to a big year for Village. Please enjoy the 9th instalment of the Village Voice.

Milnerton Away – Friday Night Lights

On Friday the 2nd of May the club travelled out to Milnerton for what was a much anticipated fixture and more than likely one of the toughest for the season. It was great to be back at Uni-Mill again after many years of relative obscurity for their club. The local community came out in their droves and the weather played its part (except for the odd misty moment which made viewing troublesome). All in all it was a great evening with hard, competitive rugby always played in a good spirit. It really was the perfect advert for club rugby. Village finished up with the u20’s and the 1sts coming away with solid victories and the 2nds and 3rds losing in close encounters. The scores were:

1st team: W 23-20

2nd team: L 26-5

3rd team: L 15-10

4th team: L 24-0 (UCT)

5th team: L 11-3 (Durbell)

u/20: W 23-7

Our 1st team had a tough encounter against a highly rated Uni-Mill team. The guys started off like a house on fire completely dominating all facets of the game and barely allowing their opposition into the Villager half for the entire first half. Thanks to the boot of Daniel Clarke and a couple of well worked tries our boys went into the shed at halftime with a commanding 20-3 lead. The second half was a completely different story however as Uni-Mill refused to be manipulated like they were in the 1st half. The game turned into an absolute humdinger as Uni-Mill came back hard with some great rugby against a very spirited defensive effort from Village. Village supporters ended up counting the seconds for the final whistle as we came away with a 23-20 win. The character shown by the guys was admirable and the lessons learnt from this encounter valuable. For the full match report you can go to

Many thanks must go to the travelling support from the club. It was great to see some of the old boys coming out to support the guys. Thanks Smiley for lifting the chaps.

This weekend the club is off to Faure Street in Paarl where we take on Young Peoples for the first time (if my memory serves me correct). Please see the pre-match report at

Martin’s Health

On a not so happy note Martin, our barman, is not well at the moment. He has an infection on his leg that has taken a turn for the worst. He has not been able to work for the last week or so and is being monitored closely by our team Doctor Sid Allie. On behalf of the club we wish Martin a speedy recovery. We will keep you guys updated as to his progress.

Many thanks to Dave, George and Lionel for going above the call of duty in making sure the bar continues to operate in Martin’s absence. We really appreciate it guys.

Kraken Rum

We welcome to the family our new sponsor alongside ESET – Kraken Rum. Kraken have taken the sleeve on the 1st team jersey. The new jersey will be worn for the first time on Saturday. Thanks Ross and Kraken for the support and no doubt we will support you back with a few cold Kraken and Cokes in the pub.

Brackenfell Lunch

On Saturday the 31st of May for the Brackenfell game we will be hosting another lunch like we did for the Helderberg game in pre-season. We are lining up some great Village men of old as guest speakers. The lunch is free for anyone who didn’t attend the last lunch and for those of you who did attend the last lunch and would like to attend this one as well it will cost R65. Invites will be going out next week. If you would like to join us please simply reply to this mail and we will make sure you recieve an invite.

Villager Club Dinner

We are very happy to announce that we have re-ignited the VFC club dinner. Please diarise Saturday the 6th of September. We have booked the ball room at Kelvin Grove. Details to follow in June but in the meantime please keep the night open. It will be a proper club dinner with players, coaches, managers, committee and members from all generations.

Club Night

Club Night continues to steam along with many close encounters for that elusive bar tab. The roll over tab is currently sitting at R900. If you sitting at home on a Thursday evening with not too much to do come down and join us for a few. With R35 for a burger and chips (very healthy portions) and a chance to win a solid prize surely it’s a no-brainer.

Thanks must go to Lionel for his sterling efforts in running this initiative.

SACS Junior vs Fish Hoek and Kirstenhof at Brookside

The club hosted a cracker of an evening on the 23rd of April as SACS junior, Fish Hoek and Kirstenhof used Brookside for their fixture. The kids loved what was probably their first experience under lights and it seems the parents enjoyed the bar. We look forward to many more of these kinds of initiatives. Thanks to Kirsten Marshall for getting the ball rolling on this one.
